With all voting centers in Harris County reporting, Joe Danna appears to have won the race for Republican candidate for Harris County sheriff. He will face incumbent Democrat Ed Gonzalez in November.
The final tally was 32,558 votes, or 51.46% of the vote, for Danna, and 30,708 votes, or 48.54% of the vote, for Paul Day, with all 109 voting centers reporting. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
In 2015, Harris County spent $24 million on animal control resources, and now, six years later, it is failing in its mission to house animals in need of a temporary home.
As recently as October, 2020, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo held a press conference to showcase the 50,000 sq. ft. facility that can house up to 525 animals, double that of the previous shelter. The only problem is that the staff and resources needed to bring in strays and provide safe shelter are sorely lacking, leaving residents to deal with potentially dangerous dogs and wild animals.
Citizens are urged to call 311, the line to Animal Control, when they notice a stray animal. Here in Sugar Land, where I live, a call to Animal Control results in an immediate response – as in 15 minutes later, someone shows up to expertly and safely remove the animal. A real life example: my daughter noticed a baby possum dying on the side of the road. She called Animal Control, they arrived moments later, and they euthanized the animal on the spot. It was all over in the span of 15 minutes.
So why must citizens in Alief call repeatedly, over the course of years, about issues regarding stray animals that pose a danger, with their phone calls going unaddressed and leading to public safety issues, animal bites, and property damage?
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Law enforcement staffing goals have not been met in the first 50 days of a $2.6 million crime-fighting initiative in Harris County.
even crime hot spots, or micro-zones, were identified in the 24-page proposal. The plan was to have 96 deputies working overtime among hot spot areas for 120 days to reduce crime. The proposal even identified when crime had proven to be worst in each area when the deputies would step up patrols.Data obtained by ABC13 shows in the first 50 days deputies have:
A nationwide spike in violent crime devastated the law enforcement community in Texas after the murder of Corporal Charles Galloway of Harris County Pct. 5. Galloway, 47, was put to rest on Tuesday. He is survived by a daughter and a sister. Galloway served the Greater Houston community for over 12 years.
Galloway was one of 3 law enforcement officers in Texas who perished on 3 consecutive days. The other officials were a special agent and a sergeant, who were also killed in the line of duty. These officers constitute 3 of 25 officers nationally who have lost their lives within the first month of 2022.
According to recent reports, nearly 460 law enforcement officers were killed in 2021, that statistic up a staggering 55% from 2020. Escalating violence toward police and anti-police sentiment in the U.S. have been detrimental to the spirit within police departments.
Joe Danna, a lifetime Houstonian and a Master Peace Officer who has worked in every division of the Constable’s Office, is getting closer to his bid for the new Harris County Sheriff position. This past Tuesday, current sheriff Ed Gonzalez was renominated for the Immigration’s and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director position, which will leave the Sheriff role open.
You may remember that on Thursday, August 27, Donna Danna, wife of Harris County Deputy Joe Danna, passed away from a massive heart attack. Donna began working with students with intellectual disabilities when she was in high school at Sam Rayburn, where she graduated in 1972.
